Two experiments were conducted to assess the addition of pistachio by-product biochar (PBB) to lactatingIn first experiment, the effects of the addition of different levels (0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5% diet on dry matter basis, DM) ofPBB on rumen fermentation parameters after 24h of incubation were investigated in a completely randomized designwith four treatments and three replications. Second experiment was designed to evaluate effect of feeding selectedlevel of PBB on performance and nutrient digestibility of 8 lactating Kermanian ewes in a Latin square change-overdesign with two 21-day periods. Methane production and ammonia-N concentrations decreased linearly (P<0.01), andpH increased linearly (P<0.01) as the dietary level of PBB raised. With the addition of 1%diet, milk yield, blood glucose, digestibility of DM increased (P<0.05) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) decreased(P<0.05) compared to control group. In general, adding 1% of PBB to lactatingand digestibility of DM.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of pistachio by-products (PBP) tannin extracts obtained by water, ethanol 70 % and methanol 80 % on the soybean meals protein protection from ruminal degradability. Soybean meal supplemented with 0.5 and 1 % tannins of different tannin extracts of PBP. Ruminal degradability and disappearance of dry matter and crude protein in untreated soybean meal (control) and soybean meal treated by tannin extracts (6 treatments) was determined in an in situ trial (three head of castrated Taleshi male calves) and post ruminal disappearance was measured in DaisyII incubator. Soybean meal supplementation with 1 % tannin from water extract, 0.5 and 1 % tannin from ethanol and methanol extracts decreased the ruminal protein disappearance (P<0.01) without any negative effect on total gastrointestinal disappearance of dry matter and crude protein. Also, the addition of all of tannin extracts to soybean meal reduced (P<0.01) the concentration of rapidly degradable proteins. In conclusion, the results showed that tannins of water, ethanol and methanol of PBP extracts could be effective on soybean meals protein's protection from ruminal degradability; however, the use of tannin from water extract of PBP can be more economical and practical.

This study was carried out to assess the effects of alfalfa hay level and replacing corn grain by other grains in starter on daily feed intake, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE) of pre and post-weaning dairy calves during the pre and post-weaning periods. For this purpose, a database Meta-analysis used in the present study. Statistical analyses were performed using PROC MIXED in SAS software. Starter intake and ADG were not affected by alfalfa hay feeding level during the pre-weaning period. However, alfalfa hay feeding tended to increase starter intake during the post-weaning and entire periods (P = 0.07 and P = 0.09, respectively). Further, ADG increased during the post-weaning and entire periods with alfalfa hay supplementation. Starter intake and ADG quadratically affected by the level of alfalfa hay supplementation. At pre-weaning period, feed efficiency tended to decrease (P = 0.06) with alfalfa hay supplementation, but was not different with control group during the post-weaning and entire periods. In addition, partial replacement of corn with other grains increased (P < 0.01) starter intake of dairy calves, but feed efficiency decreased (P < 0.01). Based upon the findings of the present research, alfalfa hay supplementation up to 7.5 % of the total diet could improve starter intake and ADG in dairy calves at post-weaning period. Further, it is possible to replace corn with other grains, up to 50 %, without any negative effect on neonatal dairy calves performance.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of ensiling pistachio by-product (PBP) on nutrient value, some physical and chemical parameters. Fresh PBP was ensiled into a trench silo for three months and simultaneously amount of PBP was dried in front of the sun. Chemical composition, buffering capacity, water holding capacity, protein fractionation according to cornell net carbohydrate and protein system (CNCPS), concentration of aflatoxin poison and ruminal and post ruminal degradability was measured for both products. The result showed that pH reduced from 4.73 to 4.12 after ensiling. The ensiled PBP had low aNDFom and water soluble carbohydrates and high phenolic compounds content compared to the sun dried PBP (P<0.05). There was no difference in buffering capacity, water holding capacity, non- protein nitrogen, concentration of aflatoxin and degradability in total gastrointestinal tract between sun-dried and ensiled PBP. Aflatoxin concentration for both PBP was in the permitable range of using in animal nutrition. It was concluded that PBP had a good potential for ensiling and that process of ensiling had no detrimental effect on nutritive value of PBP and furthermore ensiled PBP had a desirable aerobic stability.
